Copycat: Revisiting the Pink
I have no idea what possessed me to make a baby pink jacket. I am categorically NOT a pink person. It is under much duress that there is even a tiny bit of pink in my house. And I have a five year old daughter so I'm fighting a tide of it. But that is a whole separate issue which I would happily get on my soapbox about, but I won't. At least not today.
So I'll put this creation down to post-baby hormones. This is a By Hand London Victoria Blazer and is one of a few pieces of clothing I made when I first started sewing again nearly three years ago, just after my son was born. It makes sense that this jacket has never made it to the blog - I don't really wear it, I made it so long ago I've no idea what I did and I always feel like it's pretty huge, but looking at these photos it actually isn't ...
I can't bear to get rid of it, but also can't really bear to look at it ...
Until. Until I was perusing the Instagram feed of the superbly fashionly dysfunctional Leandra Medine and saw a pic of her wearing an oversized pale pink blazer with vintage jeans, a black tee and ostentatious green heels and thought .... hmmm, maybe it's time to let The Pink stretch its legs. My take on it has substantially less edge and I did feel very self-consious wearing this much pastel, but it fits well, is reaallllly comfortable and I like that my insta-lurking has breathed new life into a neglected make.
The fabric came from Croft Mill in the UK and is a heavier weight cotton with a kind of brushed surface - I think like peach skin. It's very strokable and maybe a little stiff for this project, but the crispness did make for some perfectly turned collar and cuff corners, which had never happened before, or indeed, again.
I don't think I made any pattern alterations other than to add some length to the bodice. I do remember enjoying making it, despite the fact that I decided to line it with a spotty quilting cotton (clearly the hormones were full rage, as that is so not me) and pinked the edges of the lining at the armhole which I haven't done since. There seems to be some issue at the back hem as it looks like it rolls under, but that could just be the lack of pressing and the way I'm standing. I have no desire to investigate further.
I really can't decide whether this is utterly ridiculous or actually kind of sweet, but I do know that it is a really lovely, straightforward pattern and I've been inspired to make another version in a gorgeous drapey black floral twill I've been wondering about for some time now. I think I will add a little more length to the bodice and sleeves and move the pockets down a bit for the next version.
So that's my little trip down memory lane for today. Whether I summon up the inclination to wear this much pink again any time soon is debatable.
Do you have any long forgotten makes that you've been inspired to revisit? Or are you more cut throat than me and just ditch those that don't make the grade? And what's your stance on THE PINK?
See you soon x
